Editor: Paul Holland

Series Director: Yemi Bamiro

BBC Studios for BBC

Produced in partnership with BBC Music, the four-part docuseries will premiere on BBC Two on the 21st January. Developed by Chuck D and his producing partner, Lorrie Boula.

Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World features insightful and intimate interviews with Chuck D and hip hop icons Grandmaster Caz, Ice-T, Abiodun Oyewole (The Last Poets), Roxanne Shanté, Run DMC, John Forté, will.i.am, MC Lyte, B-Real (Cypress Hill), Melle Mel, Fat Joe, Lupe Fiasco and more. It weaves these interviews with archive footage to tell the story of the relationship between politics and the hip hop movement and to explore how hip hop became a cultural phenomenon against the backdrop of American history.

Paul Holland is a big hip hop fan so this was the perfect project him. Speaking about the docuseries, he said “it was one of those  rare jobs where the narrative didn’t have to be unearthed in the edit thanks to director Yemi having a firm grip on the story he wanted to tell from the outset. The main challenges came from outside the edit suite and there were occasions when we had to fight for the cut. Ultimately everyone came on board and I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to work on such a series”.

Part one will air on Saturday 21st January on BBC Two and iPlayer.

Build Your Dream Home in the Country

Pi Productions for Channel 5

Editor: Manus Fraser

In this new primetime series, TV’s favourite builder Mark Millar helps people around the UK build their own homes, sometimes from scratch and on limited budgets.

When the client got in touch about this project, we immediately thought of Manus Fraser who had recently returned to broadcast editing and is a big fan of renovation shows. To describe his approach to the edit, Manus said: ‘Home build shows are great! The process of a house build provides a tangible narrative to build an emotional journey around. Moving home is said to be one of the most stressful things you can do so ploughing your life savings into a build in economically uncertain times is rich soil for a gripping watch. And you can pick up some DIY tips along the way.’

Watch the dream come to life on Thursday 5th January at 8pm on Channel 5.

Prince Andrew: The Musical

Hat Trick Productions for Channel 4

Executive producers: Stu Mather and Jimmy Mulville

Editor: Gavin Ames

Prince Andrew: The Musical. (Photo Channel 4)

Written by comedian Kieran Hodgson, the two hour long satirical musical extravaganza features original musical numbers and sends up the life and times of the Duke of York’s life from his marriage to Ferguson to the Virginia Giuffre’s allegations.

Hodgson plays Andrew, with Munya Chawawa as Prince Charles and it also stars comedian Harry Enfield playing Tony Blair.

This was a dream job for editor Gavin Ames, combing his favourite things of music and comedy. He said  “This job was so much fun I don’t know where to start. The show is a really interesting mix of scripted comedy, archive packages and full-on musical numbers. Apart from working with a great team the most interesting part of the process was collaborating closely with the composer throughout the edit and attending the orchestra recording session”. Original music is by Freddie Tapner, who has previously worked on Nick Mohammed’s Mr Swallow shows about Dracula and Houdini, with tracks including I Nailed It – reflecting the Prince’s deluded belief the Newsnight interview had gone well.

The musical is part of the channel’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The ladies at the Faction are intrigued by this one and will be watching!

Thursday 29th December on Channel 4 at 9pm.

My Dead Body

Editor: Matt Lowe

Executive Producer: Hannah Brownhill

Director: Sophie Robinson.

Maverick for Channel 4
5th December, Channel 4, 10pm

From the get-go, My Dead Body stood out as being one of those projects that would be ground-breaking and unique and we were excited to be able to help with it.  It needed a gentle hand to tell the heart-breaking and inspiring story of Toni Crews, a young mother of two, who was diagnosed with a rare one-a-million cancer of the tear gland, and who decided to donate her body to science to be autopsied on television. Matt Lowe was the editor on this film- as soon as we spoke to him about the project he was excited to be on board and manage the challenge of telling this story in a respectful and soulful way. He spoke to the lovely the director Sophie Robinson to make sure they were on the same wave-length and the film would be done in a way that would do justice to Toni’s memory and sacrifice, fulfilling the film’s scientific premise whilst keeping a powerful emotional and humane style of storytelling.

We spoke to Matt after the edit who explained  “the reality of dealing with some of the visuals was tough at first, but over time I was able to approach them in a way that I was able to detach myself from them somewhat and I actually found some of the tougher dissection scenes incredibly fascinating. I think the thing that everybody involved with the project was most conscious of however,  was making a film that was respectful to Toni’s memory, and was something that her family could be proud of.  I like to think that we achieved that”.

My Dead Body is a pioneering new documentary which tells the incredible story of Toni Crews, a young mother of two, who was diagnosed with a rare one-in-a-million cancer of the tear gland. When she was informed that her cancer was terminal, she made the decision to donate her body to science so that people could learn more about the disease. This film follows Prof. Claire Smith, as she continues Toni’s story by dissecting her body in a series of educational workshops. The film features home video footage and interviews with Tonis’ family as they discuss the course of her illness and gives Toni herself a presence in the film through the use of voice-replicating technology that narrates her social media posts and letters to her children.

Maradona: The Fall

Ronachan Films for DAZN international

DAZN original sports doc

Matt Lowe spent 4 months cutting this feature doc about Maradona, directed by Emmy Award-winning director Angus Macqueen. It explores the story behind Diego Maradona and how he was thrown out of the USA FIFA World Cup in 1994, after failing a post-match drugs test.

It was a challenge to make this project original as so many films have already been made about the football legend. However, this project stands out by focusing on the build-up and aftermath of one of the most notorious moments in sport history, which tipped Maradona’s career into its catastrophic downfall.

The film uses both original footage and archive, another challenge for Matt as the majority was in Spanish! However it delivers exclusive access to the characters at the centre of this dramatic event.

Available to stream here.

The Grierson Awards: Best History Documentary

We had a brilliant time at The Griersons last night, lots of fun with Tom Savage, Abs, Graham Taylor and Ella- all who had worked on four of the nominations. We were incredibly pleased that the documentary Ella edited won the Best History Category and received some amazing comments from the judges.

The Missing Children

We had a brilliant time at The Griersons last night, a huge congratulations to Ella Newton, Editor of The Missing Children which won Best History Doc!

At the Tuam mother and baby home, 796 children born to unwed mothers have disappeared. The bodies of some have been found in a sewage tank. Through personal narratives of survivors, adoptees, and the women who pieced together the evidence that shook Ireland to its core, leading to an unprecedented apology from the Irish State, The Missing Children uncovers the truth of a shocking story which continues to affect the lives of many globally.

The judges said:The Missing Children showed humanity, integrity and diligent research. The testimonies of its contributors were compelling and balanced. We felt proud to be in the company of the investigators who peeled back layer upon layer of cruelty and horror to reveal this devastating story. Their skilful and touching storytelling is an inspiration for all documentary filmmakers.”

Congratulations to Ella and the team at True Vision.
